what's
all the buzz?
Illinois
Entertainer - Feb. 03
Marigold
Engine stuff a lot of variety
on their aptly-titled In
A Big Room. The ear-candy
opener, "You're the lightning,"
pops right out with a slinky
hook and shimmering guitars.
"Drive In" mixes thick guitar
sludge and ringing accents to
pleasing effect. Acoustic strumming
and earnest pleading permeate
the title track. Then things
start to get weird.. they add
electronics: "Diva" features
a skittering beat and curious
effects and "Virtual" sounds
much like Depeche Mode. Chapterhouse's
entire career on one disc. -Patrick

Some excerpts
from the review:
Score:
5 out of 5
"Solid hooks, charismatic vocals,
"lots" of adrenaline and a gut
feel for where to lay the icing
on thick." That somewhat paints
the picture of one of the best
pop/rock groups I've heard in
a very long time...
...Chicago,
Illinois is the lucky host for
this aspiring, talented trio
calling themselves Marigold
Engine. Steve Taylor possesses
a George Michael / Stevie Wonder
/ Bono vocal style that never
even hints at a sour note, and
is executed with pure emotion
and professional control...
...all
you really need to know is:
If you like good solid modern
rock that is not short on creativity
and instrumental know-how, then
you just have to get the album.
If all goes the way it should,
this band will be making their
way into your home anyhow!
...This
is definitely a potent brew
of talent that puts 'In A Big
Room' on a level unparalleled
by other locals.
...The
production quality of the album
can stand up to anything out
there. A vocal sometimes akin
to Stevie Wonder, musically
going in the direction of such
bands as U2 and Better Than
Ezra. This band is a master at
high-driven pop rock with a
genius flair for effect and
melody, propelled by the programming
skill of . Totally refreshing,
contemporary rock with a techno
feel.
...makes
this band a highly probable
candidate for "going to the
top."This is one of the best
albums I've heard to date in
the Midwest region.
G. Cataline, MUEN.net
They
even listed us "Best of the
Midwest"!

Review
by StarPolish- Fall

Here’s
a good, but not yet great, example
of Adult Top 40 pop. Steve Taylor’s
high-tenor vocals on “Better
Than It Was Before” are terrific,
and the background vocals are
arranged smartly, but the song
itself just doesn’t have the
“hook” to mark it as a candidate
for a hit single. As songwriting
goes, I was more impressed with
the intense “Goodbye,” though
I couldn’t help wishing the
vocals were even bigger and
brighter. Marigold Engine, despite
their self-description as “electronic
rock,” are mining the same territory
that’s brought Matchbox Twenty
considerable success in recent
years; and while they don’t
yet have the key song to put
them over the top, they’ve got
the approach, the talent and
the style. Joseph

Grounded
by the rubber in your soul
If
emo is too emo for you and the
ubiquitous alternative rock
metal has started dull your
senses with sameness, you might
find In a Big Room, the
new cd by Marigold Engine just
the fix of good rock with enough
grounding in the past to slide
you into that comfort zone where
you feel like this band has
always been your friend &
you're just glad that they finally
came out with something new
for you to groove to.
Whether
it's the driving base on
Drive In, or the silky vocals
In a Big Room or Virtual's
techno-groove there's something
here to please.
You're
the Lightning, the opening
track, is clearly single material
with it's spunky U2-like guitar,
rich vocals and crisp drums.
Track two, Goodbye, has
funky acoustic verses, power
chord chorus, and timely lyrics
about New York memories.
Drive In is just as catchy
as You're the Lightning,
but In a Big Room is
my favorite. It's beautiful
ballad feel, clean melody &
fresh harmonies are perfectly
balanced with airy guitars and
fills.
For
those who are patient enough
to dig deep into the tracks,
you'll find the little gem
Diva and the disco/rock/techno
Virtual, which manages to
sound fresh without blowing
your head off. This band has
found a groove niche for pop
music lovers who've been missing
the mid-tempo world that's easy
to listen to without being "easy
listening".
And,
as a bonus, you get three tracks
from their 1999 self-titled
e.p. Their song, Dear Miss
Heart, will always be one
of my favorites, echoing the
feel of Costello's Watching
the Detectives grafted to
a slow-groove ballad.
Check
out this effort from this new
band while they're fresh and
tryin' hard, and you might just
be rewarded with a new band
to sit back, enjoy & follow
for years to come. -Kevin Valentine

review of song 'in a big room'
GooGoo
style with a twist...
Production elements and lyrics
are pretty unforgettable. This
is probly the best song I've
rated yet.The Vocals are excellent,
like incubus... Nice expression,Beautiful
amounts of feeling. As a vocalist
I would ask for nothing less
than a band that sounds this
good together. I would buy this
C.D. for my girlfriend and hide
a burnt copy for myself.
